How to VPN Into Your Home Network From Anywhere

There are two reasons people search for how to VPN into their home network: to reach devices sitting at home (a NAS, security cameras, a media server), and to make outbound traffic look like it’s coming from home. They’re related but not identical, and the setup differs depending on which one you actually need.

Why People VPN Into Their Home Network

If you just want to reach your home devices, you need inbound access — a tunnel that lets your laptop, wherever it is, talk to things sitting on your home LAN. If you want your outbound browsing and work traffic to exit through your home connection so it carries your home IP, you need full-tunnel routing, not just device access. A lot of people set up the first and are surprised it doesn’t solve the second.

The DIY Route

The classic approach: install WireGuard or OpenVPN server software on a spare router, Raspberry Pi, or NAS. You’ll need to open a port on your home router, likely set up dynamic DNS since most home IPs aren’t static, and generate/manage keys for every device that connects. It’s free (aside from hardware) and fully under your control. It’s also entirely your responsibility if your home IP changes, your port-forward rule breaks after a router firmware update, or you forget to renew a certificate.

None of that is hard exactly, but it’s ongoing maintenance, and if you want all your traffic routed through home (not just access to specific devices), you need to configure full-tunnel routing explicitly — most default guides only set up split-tunnel access to the home LAN.

The Plug-and-Play Route

A home IP router handles the dynamic DNS, the port configuration, and the full-tunnel routing automatically — you plug the home unit into your existing router, pair your travel device, and every connection from that device exits through home by default. It’s the difference between building the tool and just using it.

Security Considerations

Whichever route you take, a few things matter regardless: use a modern protocol (WireGuard over OpenVPN where possible — faster and simpler to audit), make sure there’s an actual kill switch so a dropped tunnel doesn’t silently leak your real IP, and don’t reuse your home Wi-Fi password as your VPN credential. Treat the tunnel like the front door it is.

Which Setup Fits You

If you’re comfortable with networking and just need occasional access to a home NAS, the DIY route is genuinely fine. If your income depends on your traffic consistently looking like it’s coming from home — remote work tied to a location, compliance requirements, or just not wanting to think about it — the maintenance burden of a DIY setup isn’t worth the risk of it silently breaking at the wrong moment.
